Thanksgiving and then Christmas, Hanukah or Kwanza, or even Yule…whatever you celebrate during the upcoming holiday season,we want to be included in your festivities. The first step into the holidays every year is Thanksgiving. While most people know of Columbus and the Native Americans who joined together in their harvest meal in 1492, many don’t know how long it took to become a national holiday. “The Continental Congress proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving in 1777. A somber event, it specifically recommended “that servile labor and such recreations (although at other times innocent) may be unbecoming the purpose of this appointment [and should] be omitted on so
solemn an occasion"(Plantation, n.d)
Thankfully in today’s world, “each year on the fourth Thursday in November, Americans gather for a day of feasting, football and family. While today’s Thanksgiving celebrations would likely be unrecognizable to attendees of the original…harvest meal, it continues to be a day for Americans to come together.” (History)
